Nicola and Melvin recently joined me for their pre-wedding shoot at Winterbourne House and Garden in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Their wedding at Moxhull Hall near Sutton Coldfield is coming up soon so the shoot gave us valuable time together before their wedding day.

The gardens provided plenty of variety throughout the session. We could use different areas to create a range of photographs while giving Nicola and Melvin time to become comfortable in front of the camera.

Like many couples, they felt nervous at the start. However, that soon changed. Most couples arrive saying they are nervous about being photographed and leave saying how much they enjoyed it. Nicola and Melvin were no different and quickly became comfortable with the direction I gave them.

I guide couples through a variety of poses and show them how I work. This gives them the opportunity to become familiar with direction rather than wondering what they should do in front of the camera.

As the session progresses, confidence grows. By the time the wedding arrives, couples already know what to expect and have a better understanding of how I work.

The shoot also gives us time together away from the wedding day schedule. For many couples, this makes the process of being photographed feel much easier.

Another question I am sometimes asked concerns photographing people with different skin tones.

Some couples have experienced photographs that did not represent them accurately. In many cases, the issue comes down to how the photographer has handled the available light.

Good wedding photography starts with understanding light. Exposure, positioning and the direction of the light all affect how skin appears in photographs.

Over my career I have photographed people with a wide range of skin tones. That experience helps me assess each situation and make the right adjustments for the available light.

Every location presents different conditions. Strong sunlight, shade, indoor lighting and mixed light can all affect skin tones differently.

If this is something you are concerned about, look carefully through a photographer’s portfolio. Check how consistently different people are represented across different lighting conditions.

Creating Their Wedding Guest Book

After the shoot, Nicola and Melvin will choose their favourite images from their online gallery.

I will then design their personalised wedding guest book ready for the wedding day.

The guest book comes included with every wedding photography package. I do not charge extra for it.

Guests can leave their own messages alongside the photographs during the wedding. Afterwards, Nicola and Melvin will have a keepsake containing both their chosen photographs and the words written by their family and friends.

With their pre-wedding shoot now complete, the countdown to Nicola and Melvin’s wedding has begun.
